Aquent Partners: Space Telescope Science Institute,  Baltimore, MD

Web System and Services Administrator – Technology Infrastructure Management

STScI is funded by NASA to operate and utilize Hubble Space Telescope

● Planned, executed, and maintained the Institute’s web and application infrastructure consisting of 80 web servers, generating 60,000 hits per day and exceeding 5,000,000 hits, during major press releases.

● Restructured the web architecture at the Institute implementing new technologies and methods to improve efficiency and ease management.

● Developed the official procedures for building, upgrading, maintaining, and migrating web systems including Apache (httpd), Tomcat, and IIS, on Solaris, Linux, and Windows platforms.

● Developed and deployed Big Brother as the Institute’s first and only cross-platform monitoring service effectively monitoring dozens of servers to measure and alert for system and service uptime, performance, and various other checks.

● Worked closely with staff scientist, engineers, and other groups to adapt the web resources to best suit their needs which entailed frequent changes to host and service configurations.

ARBROS Communications, Silver Spring, MD

Internet Systems and Services Administrator – Operations

ARBROS Communications was an ISP CLEC with presence in most every major sector of Verizon’s East Coast footprint, before having to close its doors in early 2002

● Designed, implemented and managed all customer facing internet services including e-mail, DNS, Web, and MRTG.

● Deployed and administered a multi-node Checkpoint Firewall solution implementing VPN, DMZ, IDS, and various other system and security services.

● Deployed and administered SUN enterprise class systems consisting of both machines supporting customer services, as well as those internal to company operations.

● Co-developed and implemented a Wide Area Ethernet strategy in effort to diminish the company’s overhead by avoiding expensive ATM equipment previously used to transport IP.

● Initialized a company-internal Internet Services Education program.

● Participated in design, deployment, and administration of both the multiple peer customer facing IP network and the 12-node company internal network

● Retained after a 90% reduction in force left making me solely responsible for the entirety of the company’s IT department including mail, web sites, database servers, billing servers, firewalls, NT Domain servers, customer and internal IP network, and at times lan and desktop administration and maintenance.

Rivien was a CLEC ISP startup that closed its doors Feb. 2001

● Configured and tested customer facing Internet Services including e-mail and DNS.

● Installed, configured, and tested IP Routers, ATM, DSL, DSLAMs, MUXs, facilities, Voice Gateway, Domain Name servers, and other telecom and internetworking equipment to engineer/provision a new circuit’s logical connection to Rivien’s network for both data and voice.

● Collaborated with the engineering group to design and build the backbone POPs and Co-lo facilities.

● Participated on the Alpha test team as an integral member by helping to design and launch the DSL and DS1 products

 

 

May 1999 – November 2000

Intermedia Business Internet, Beltsville, MD

Shift Manager/Team Lead – Customer Support Center

Intermedia Communications was a tier-one ISP, CLEC, and Voice provider.   In 1999 they were rated number one in customer support in the industry.

● Supervised and managed a Customer Support Center team by directly coaching 5 technicians and in-directly supervising 35 technicians.

● Performed management tasks such as interviewing, hiring, training, performing evaluations, and implementing departmental promotions/awards.

● Collaborated with the management team in department re-structuring that included but was not limited to: the training program, the educational path for existing technicians, job duties and requirements, and improved interdepartmental communication.

October 1999 – May 2000

Lease Line Support Technician – Level 1 and Level2

● Tested and mended connectivity issues between client networks and Intermedia’s Tier 1 international IP backbone as well as DNS, e-mail, and LAN issues.

● Performed CPE, LEC, and network (internal and external ISP) troubleshooting.

● Configured Cisco routers to support a wide range of network services.
